Enter a vortex of serenity
Ever since the invention of the kaleidoscope 170 years ago, people have been fascinated with the mathematical phenomena and infinite interplay of mirrors. This beautiful optical instrument, in its simplest form, crafts a myriad of patterns and colours. Artist, Keith Courtney, builds off this idea of a kaleidoscope and transforms it into a gigantic, interactive mirror maze for all to enjoy.
The work evokes the same fascination as when the device was first invented. It encourages a dialogue between our sight and bodies as we are immersed within the optical experience. Kaleidoscope utilises optical illusions of epic proportions to create extraordinary spaces that can be physically explored.
Audiences will be familiar with Courtney’s previous work, which includes the internationally acclaimed House of Mirrors, and the endless labyrinth that was 1,000 Doors.
Kaleidoscope comprises glass, steel, mirrors and moving prisms, allowing visitors navigate a 700sqm maze of corridors. By day, visitors will experience a sparkling crystal palace as the open-air structure transports them to another world. As the sun sets, they will become part of a spectacular colour field of ever-changing light.
Courtney collaborated with visual artists Ash Keating and Samantha Slicer, composer Tamil Rogeon and The National Boys Choir to create an all-encompassing sensory experience.
As Courtney describes, “just like an original kaleidoscope where you will never see the exact same pattern twice, no one will have the same experience in my Kaleidoscope. With Kaleidoscope, the visitor is completely submerged in sound and light where their experience is entirely personal.”
Courtney’s work provides a much needed safe haven for reflection and meditation both literally and figuratively.
